Wine is the poetry of earth, its chant towards the sky. A glass of wine goes together with food and inebriates, tells us about Civilization, History, Work of men who gave It Life. We are aware of wine realities of France, Italy, Spain, even United States, Argentina, Australia, the list is never ending. But let’s listen now to the Voice of Wines of Macedonia. The Pearl of the Balkans. The Mediterranean climate of Vardar river’s valley, rich in thermal and mineral sources and its several wonderful lakes (among which we remind Lake Ohrid and Prespa) together with the presence of mountains, that limits the influence of cold air, its fertile soil, make Macedonia the ideal land for grape cultivation. The grape history in Macedonia has ancient times’’ roots. It was drunk in the court of Philip the II and his son Alexander The Great. Also in the archeological sites of Macedonia, we can see images of vines and grape carved in marble, stone and terracotta. Part of the Eastern Rome Empire until the seventh century, it’s one of the most important region for grape cultivation; some relevant and interesting pictures - in Macedonia - represent the celebrations in honor of the God of Wine, held twice a year. Grapevines in Macedonia are cultivated in an area of 28.500 ha (is almost equal to the area planted in Bordeaux, France), the 2/3 are for wine production.35% of the wine sorts are used for red wine production and the rest is for white wines. The annual wine production is 1-1.2 mil hectoliters and 80% is exported. In the Powardarje region, the Vardar River Valley, a territory bordering Serbia and Greece, the 75% of Macedonian’s grapes are grown and lays the 85% of wine production. As the saying goes ”If you want to get to know a nation, sit at their table and drink their wine”. The taste of a particular food, almost always, shows and exalt the specific wine qualities. At the same time wine qualities complete “spiritualize” the pleasure of tasting food. Wine and food borning of the same Land are a perfect wedding…. It happens in Macedonia! .
